Who shouldn’t eat spirulina?

Spirulina has many health benefits, but even the healthiest food is not suitable for everyone.

Who shouldn’t eat spirulina?

The biggest danger of spirulina (we covered this topic before) comes from the contamination. Make sure your spirulina comes from a safe source and doesn’t have liver-damaging microcystins, toxic metals, and harmful bacteria. Spirulina of unknown origin can give you stomach pain, nausea or vomiting and damage your liver in the worst case scenario.

Pregnant and breastfeeding:

Our spirulina is safe during pregnancy (again, our spirulina is free of toxins and heavy metals) and we even recommend using it. We recommend it even more during breastfeeding to get essential vitamins and minerals. But it’s always safe to ask your doctor if you should take spirulina during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Auto-immune diseases:

Spirulina can make your immune system more active, which is one of its benefits, but if you have an auto-immune disease like multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, pemphigus vulgaris and others, it’s better to consult your doctor before taking spirulina.

Phenylketonuria:

This is another case where spirulina is not recommended. PKU is a genetic disease which causes lower metabolism of the amino acid phenylalanine. Since spirulina has phenylalanine, it can worsen the disease. This disease can lead to seizures, behavioral problems, intellectual disability, and mental disorder.

Apart from mentioned cases, there is no reason you shouldn’t enjoy all the benefits of spirulina.
