It is something we all long for – a definitive cure for the dreaded hangover.
Painkillers, water, energy drinks and a hit of greasy food, all promise to ease the pain but by then it’s often too late.
Now, experts claim a new superfood could prevent your hangover before it even kicks in.
It packs a punch, flooding the body with essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients.
But what’s most surprising about this green crusader, is that it is a type of algae.
Chlorella is a sea algae that grows in freshwater, nutritionist Nikki Ostrower of NAO Nutrition in New York City told Daily Mail Online.
Ms Ostrower said: ‘It has an abundance of antioxidants, minerals, vitamins and amino acids.
‘The bright green color also has a very high chlorophyll content, so it’s known as a huge liver detoxifier.’
Chlorella is mostly farmed in Taiwan or Japan, but a person can easily find it online or in a health food store, according to Ms Ostrower.
And, it’s available as both a supplement or a powder.
If someone decides to purchase the powdered version, Ms Ostrower recommends mixing it with a smoothie or water with lemon.
REVEALED… CHLORELLA’S MANY SUPERPOWERS
Chlorella can be taken every day, the nutritionist said.
The algae is high in protein, as well as Vitamins A and B, iron, magnesium and zinc.
As a result, it can help a person fight off environmental toxins, beat fatigue or ward off illness.
Ms Ostrower said: ‘Chlorella in itself is amazing for your immune system.’
The zinc and vitamins it harbors help prevent – or get rid of – colds, viruses and flu.
Furthermore, it’s ‘amazing for your skin,’ Ms Ostrower said.
But perhaps most impressive of all, it can block the harmful effects of alcohol by helping the body detox.
Chlorella has all the ingredients necessary to knock out a hangover.
But, it will only work if taken at least two hours before a night of drinking.
The algae works by protecting the liver before alcohol is consumed, thus acting in a preventative way.
Ms Ostrower said: ‘It floods your body with all of the nutrients that are robbed from it when you drink alcohol.’
If taken before a night out, the next day a person will notice their hangover is less intense than usual.
Or, if a person is lucky, they may experience no hangover at all.
However, if a person has a late night, Chlorella won’t prevent them from feeling tired.
They’ll still be exhausted no matter what – but at least their nausea will be kept at bay.
But, Ms Ostrower, of NAO Nutrition, warns that taking it after a night of drinking won’t have the same effect.
It won’t have prevented the liver from alcohol’s damage – and the intensity of the algae could cause a person to be sick.
